So I finally caved and tried Meta Muse Image last week, mostly because my Instagram feed wouldn’t stop showing me those glossy AI generated posts and I got curious, and honestly a little jealous, about how people were making them so fast. I’d heard the name floating around for a bit Muse Image, Meta’s first proper in house image generator, built by the Superintelligence Labs team under Alexandr Wang but I never bothered opening the Meta AI app until my sister sent me a picture of her dog sitting in what looked like a Renaissance painting and said “guess what made this.” That was the hook. I opened the app that same night, half tired, coffee gone cold next to my laptop, and just started messing around.

The first thing that struck me, and I mean this in a good way, is that it doesn’t feel like a separate app bolted onto Meta’s stuff. It’s just… there. Inside Meta AI, inside Instagram Stories, even showing up in WhatsApp chats if you’re in one of the countries where that’s rolled out yet. I typed a pretty ordinary prompt at first nothing fancy, just wanted to see my cat as an astronaut, because apparently that’s the universal first test everyone runs on these tools and it actually understood the little details I threw in, like the type of helmet and the background being Earth from space rather than just “stars.” It didn’t nail it perfectly on the first try, if I’m being honest. The paws looked a bit off, almost boneless, like a stress ball wearing gloves. But when I circled the paws with the little markup pencil tool and asked it to fix “just this part,” it actually listened and didn’t regenerate the whole image from scratch, which is more than I can say for some other tools I’ve used where one small edit ruins everything else in the picture.

What really got me experimenting, though, was the room redesign thing. I’m currently trying to make my apartment look less like a grad student lived there for six years (guilty), so I took a photo of my cramped living room and asked Muse to imagine it with warmer lighting and a mid century couch. It didn’t just spit out a fantasy render disconnected from reality it pulled in actual furniture that exists, stuff you could genuinely go buy off Facebook Marketplace. I sat there for a solid ten minutes just tapping through couch options like I was window shopping in an alternate universe where my apartment already looked good. Is that a little bit of a dopamine trap, designed to nudge me toward clicking “buy”? Probably, yeah. I won’t pretend I didn’t enjoy it anyway.

There’s also this @ mention feature where you can pull in someone’s public Instagram photos to combine into a new image, and, look, I get why people are uneasy about that. I tried tagging a friend’s public account to make a joke birthday poster, and it worked shockingly well, almost too well, blending her face from an old photo into a completely different scene. It’s clever technology, genuinely impressive from an engineering standpoint, but there’s something about it that made me pause for a second before hitting send. Meta says people can opt out of being referenced this way, and to be fair the feature is opt out rather than something you have to specifically request as the subject, which if you ask me feels backwards. It should probably be opt in by default, not something you have to know exists in order to turn off. That’s just my take, and plenty of people online seem to agree, based on the pushback I’ve seen since launch.

On the technical side, without getting too deep into jargon, the model apparently reasons through a prompt before generating, sort of planning the layout first, checking real world details, then building the image, rather than just guessing pixel by pixel in one shot. You can kind of feel that when you use it there’s a small delay, a few seconds where it seems to be “thinking,” and then the result tends to actually match what you asked for instead of some loosely related interpretation. Meta’s own comparisons put it ahead of Google’s newest image model on editing tasks specifically, though apparently still a bit behind what OpenAI has out right now overall. I can’t verify benchmark claims myself, obviously, I’m not running lab tests in my bedroom, but from casual use it did feel more consistent across multiple small edits than I expected going in.

One thing I appreciated, mostly because I’m the kind of person who overthinks stuff like this, is that images made with Muse carry an invisible watermark called Content Seal, meant to survive cropping or screenshotting so people can later tell an image was AI generated. I don’t know how foolproof that actually is in practice, and I imagine determined people will find ways around it eventually, they always do, but it’s a nice gesture toward not letting AI images blend invisibly into everything else online.

It’s free for casual use, which matters if you’re just messing around like I was, though there’s a cap before you’re nudged toward one of Meta’s paid subscription tiers if you want to keep generating. For someone like me who just wanted to turn my cat into an astronaut and my apartment into something slightly less depressing, the free tier was more than enough.

Would I recommend actually trying it? Yeah, honestly, I would, if only because it’s oddly fun in a way that surprised me given how skeptical I usually am about this stuff. Just go in knowing it’s still Meta, still hungry for engagement and ad dollars underneath the fun filters, and that the line between “helpful creative tool” and “targeted advertising machine” is thinner here than the marketing wants you to notice.
